   Miep Gies, the most famous of the protectors of Anne Frank and the others in the Secret Annex, died today. Without her, the world would not have one of the most important historical records of the Holocaust or one of its most enduring and important legacies. My entire fascination with the Holocaust, which has shaped my interest in religion and in history, began with Anne Frank’s diary, which we owe to Miep. Rest in peace.
